Adam Smith served in the Washington Senate, 1990-96, and was elected to the U.S. House in 1996, defeating incumbent Republican Rep. Randy Tate with 51 percent of the vote.
He was re-elected in 1998, becoming the first person to win back-to-back elections in the district since it was realigned in 1990. He defeated Republican Ron Taber with 65 percent of the vote.
He ran unopposed in the September 2000 primary, winning the Democratic nomination for the 9th District House seat with 60 percent of the vote. Republican challenger Chris Vance garnered 29 percent, edging out fellow Republican Gary Snell, who drew in 8 percent. He won the 2000 general election with 62 percent of the vote.
In 2002, he was re-elected with 59 percent of the vote.
