Biography:

Christopher H. Smith was born in Rahway, N.J., and resides in Hamilton, N.J. He received a bachelor's degree in 1975 from Trenton State College, and studied at Worcester College in England. He worked for his family's sporting goods business.

From 1976 to 1978, he was executive director of the New Jersey Right to Life Committee.

Smith was elected to the U.S. House in 1980, and was re-elected to 11 consecutive terms.

Smith and his wife, Marie, have four children.


Past Campaigns:

Christopher Smith was elected to the U.S. House in 1980 with 57 percent of the vote, ousting incumbent Democratic Rep. Frank Thompson Jr.

Smith was re-elected to five consecutive terms, defeating Democrat Mark Setaro with 65 percent of the vote in 1990. He won re-election in 1992 with 63 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Brian Hughes. He defeated Democrat Ralph Walsh in 1994 with 68 percent.

In 1996, he was re-elected with 64 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Kevin Meara. Smith was re-elected in 1998, defeating Democrat Larry Schneider with 62 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2000 with 66 percent of the vote. And in 2002, he won re-election with 66 percent of the vote.

Before coming to Congress, Smith, with 37 percent of the vote, lost to then-incumbent Thompson, who won with 61 percent of the vote, in the 1978 race for the House seat.
