Richard "Rick" Snuffer was born and raised in southern West Virginia. When he was 11, Snuffer began working with WESco Homes, the construction business started by his grandfather. After a one-semester stint at what was then Beckley College in 1982, a term as interim pastor with the United Methodist Church and brief work in the insurance industry, Snuffer returned to WESco Homes.
By 1996, Snuffer had become a vice president of the family company. In the mid-1990s, he also hosted a daily local radio program, "Tell a Vision on the Radio," and taught Biblical economics.
When his father-in-law was injured on the job in 1998, Snuffer ran his Raleigh, N.C., contruction business until he recovered.
Married since 1993 and the father of three sons, Snuffer has been grooming his younger brother to succeed him at WESco Homes.
"Work weeks of 60 to 75 hours were getting old, and I sensed it was a time of preparation for something new, Snuffer has said.
This is the first political campaign for Richard "Rick" Snuffer. He defeated Gary M. "Marty" Gearheart of Bluefield, 58 percent to 42 percent in the May 11 GOP primary.
