Biography:

Vic Snyder was born September 27, 1947 in Medford, Ore. After graduating from Medford High School, Snyder attended college at Willamette University in Salem, Ore. Between his sophomore and junior years at Willamette, Snyder volunteered for the United States Marine Corps, in which he served from 1967 to 1969, eventually earning the rank of corporal.

He served for one year in Vietnam with Headquarters Company, First Marine Division. In 1973, Snyder returned to college at Willamette University.

He earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1975 and then attended medical school at the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center in Portland, Oregon, where he earned his medical doctorate in 1979.

Following his graduation from medical school, Snyder moved from Oregon to Little Rock, Arkansas, where he was a family practice resident at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

He finished his residency in 1982 and worked as a family practice physician in central Arkansas for more than 15 years. During this time, Snyder took part in several medical missions to third-world countries, including work in the Cambodian refugee camps in Thailand, the El Salvadoran refugee camps in Honduras, a West African mission hospital in Sierra Leone, and an Ethiopian refugee camp in Sudan.

In 1985, while continuing to practice medicine, he returned to school to obtain a law degree, which he earned from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock School of Law in 1988.

In July 2003, Snyder married a Methodist minister, the Rev. Betsy Singleton, pastor of Quapaw Quarter United Methodist Church.

Past Campaigns:

In 1990, Vic Snyder successfully ran for the Arkansas Senate, where he served from 1991 to 1996.

In 1996, Snyder won election to the United States House of Representatives from the 2nd District, central Arkansas. He narrowly defeated a moderate Republican in a race in which the state GOP labeled Snyder one of the state's most liberal legislators.

He was re-elected in 1998 and 2000. In 2002, he was unchallenged.
