Biography:

John Spratt was born in Charlotte, N.C., and resides in York, S.C. He received a bachelor's degree in 1964 from Davidson College, a master's degree in 1966 from Oxford University in England, and a law degree from Yale Law School in 1969.

He was an U.S. Army captain, serving from 1969 to 1971. He practiced law. He was president of the Bank of Fort Mill and headed the family-owned Spratt Insurance Agency. He was president of the York Chamber of Commerce.

Spratt was first elected to the U.S. House in 1982.

He and his wife, Jane, have three children.


Past Campaigns:

John Spratt was elected to the U.S. House in 1982 with 68 percent of the vote, defeating Republican John S. Wilkerson.

He was re-elected to four consecutive terms, facing no Republican opposition in 1990.

In 1994, he got a scare, winning re-election with 52 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Larry Bigham.

He defeated Bigham again in 1996 with 54 percent of the vote and in 1998 captured 57 percent against Republican Mike Burkhold. He was re-elected in 2000 with 59 percent of the vote.

In 2002, he won re-election with 86 percent of the vote.
