Biography:

Bart Stupak was born in Milwaukee and resides in Menominee, Mich. He received an associate's degree in criminal justice from Northwestern Michigan Community College in 1972. He received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Saginaw Valley State College in 1977. He earned his law degree from Cooley Law School in Lansing, Mich., in 1981.

He was a police officer in Escanaba, Mich., from 1972 to 1973 and a trooper and instructor with the Michigan State Police from 1973 to 1984. He was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives for a term starting in 1989 but in 1990 lost a state Senate bid and resumed his law practice in Menominee.

Stupak was first elected to the U.S. House in 1992.

He and his wife, Laurie, have one adult son.


Past Campaigns:

Bart Stupak unseated two-term Republican Jim Connors for a state House seat in 1988. Two years later, he tried to move up to the state Senate, but lost to Don Koivisto in the Democratic primary.

Stupak was elected to the U.S. House in 1992 with 56 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Phil Ruppe. He was re-elected in 1994, defeating Republican Gil Ziegler with 57 percent of the vote. In 1996, Stupak was re-elected with 71 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Bob Carr.

In 1998, he defeated Republican Michelle McManus with 59 percent of the vote.

He was re-elected in 2000 with 58 percent of the vote over longtime GOP activist Chuck Yob.

In 2002, he was re-elected with 68 percent of the vote over Don Hooper.
