Biography:
Joe Sullivan was born in Atlanta and earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1952.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean War, repairing runways in the combat zone and working as a water purification specialist.
After the war, he served in the Air Force Reserve until 1980. Sullivan said his war experiences inspired him to become a minister and he enrolled in Baylor University, earning a bachelor's degree in history in 1955.
He received a master of divinity in theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a master of arts in religion from Baylor before becoming pastor of a Baptist church in Louisiana.
A member of his church asked him to fill in as a high school math and science teacher, where he discovered a love for education. He went back to school and received a master of arts in psychology from the University of Texas in 1966.
He began teaching psychology at San Antonio College that year and still works there today. Sullivan helped found the nondenominational All Believer's Church in San Antonio in the early 1980s and remains a pastor there.
He has married more than 8,000 couples, many of them in free court house wedding ceremonies he has offered each Valentine's Day since 1989. Sullivan is married with three children.
