Biography:
A native of Kewanee, Ill., Charlie Summers graduated from Kewanee High School in 1978, attended Blackhawk College-East and earned a public administration degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign.
In 1982 he moved to Maine, where he met his first wife, Debra. The couple had two children, but Debra died in an auto accident.
Summers remarried in 2002 and now lives in Scarborough with his wife Ruth.
Summers served two terms in the Maine state Senate, from 1990 to 1994, then ran unseccessfully for GOP primary for Maine's 1st District seat in the U.S. House.
He served eight years as an aide to Republican U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine, resigning from the post in 2004 to run for Congress.
Summers has been in the U.S. Naval Reserve for eight years. After Sept. 11, 2001, his unit was activated and he worked seven months in the Pentagon.
Following active duty, Summers resumed his responsibilities as a training officer based at the Naval Air Station in Brunswick, Maine.

Summers defeated a seven-term legislator in 1990 to win a southern Maine state Senate seat.
In 1994, he lost the GOP primary for 1st District seat.
