Biography:

John Sweeney was born in Troy, N.Y., and resides in Clifton Park, N.Y. He graduated from Troy's Lansingburgh High School in 1973. He received an associate's degree from Hudson Valley Community College in 1978 and graduated from Russell Sage College with a bachelor's degree. He attended the Western New England School of Law.

In 1992, Sweeney became the New York Republican State Committee's executive director and chief counsel. He was appointed commissioner of the state Department of Labor in 1995 under Gov. George Pataki. In 1997 he become a top aide to Pataki, officially known as a deputy secretary to the state Executive Chamber. He was first elected to Congress in 1998.

Sweeney is divorced and has three children.


Past Campaigns:

John Sweeney was elected to the U.S. House in 1998, winning the 22nd District seat with 55 percent of the vote over Democrat Jean Bordewich. The seat became open when veteran Republican Rep. Gerald Solomon retired.

In 2000, Sweeney defeated Democrat Kenneth McCallion with 68 percent of the vote.

He defeated Frank Stoppenbach in 2002 with 73 percent of the vote.
