Gene Taylor defeated Republican Tom Anderson in the 1989 special U.S. House election with 65 percent of the vote. Taylor was re-elected in 1990 with 81 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Sheila Smith.
He won re-election again in 1992 with 63 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Paul Harvey. He defeated Republican George Barlos in 1994 with 60 percent of the vote. In 1996, he was re-elected with 58 percent of the vote against Republican Dennis Dollar.
Taylor was re-elected in 1998 by defeating Republican Randy McDonnell with 78 percent of the vote. Taylor ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House in 1988.
He was re-elected in 2000 with 79 percent of the vote. In 2002, he was re-elected with 75 percent of the vote.
