Biography:

David Thomas was born Oct. 10, 1948, in Lekewood, Colo., and lives in Arvada. He received his bachelor's degree from Phillips University and a law degree from the University of Colorado.

Thomas first served as District Attorney for Jefferson and Gilpin Counties when he was appointed to the post by Governor Dick Lamm in 1985. He lost his election bid for district attorney in 1986.

In January 1987, Gov. Roy Romer named Thomas executive director of the Department of Public Safety where he directed the Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice for six years. In 1992, he ran again for district attorney and voters elected him to a four year term. He was re-elected in 1996 and 2000.

Thomas ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for the new 7th Congressional District in 2002 and lost in the primary to Mike Feeley, who narrowly lost in the general election to Republican Bob Beauprez.

Thomas and his wife, Shirley, have two children. He also is raising his niece, Maggie.
