Biography:

Nancy Thompson was born in Sioux Falls, S.D. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Creighton University in Omaha.

She was appointed to the nonpartisan, one-house Nebraska Legislature in November 1997 by Democratic Gov. Ben Nelson. She was elected to the seat in 1998 and re-elected in 2002.

Before that, Thompson served on the Sarpy County Board of Commissioners for eight years. She also was a member of U.S. Rep. John Cavanaugh district staff and deputy chief of staff to Nelson.

Thompson, originally a fourth-grade teacher, also has served as executive director of two nonprofit agencies.

In the Legislature, she serves on the Appropriations Committee, Executive Board and Building Maintenance Committee and has served on the Transportation and Telecommunications Committee, Health and Human Services Committee and Rules Committee.

She has chaired the Health and Human Services Committee of the Midwest Council of State Governments and served as vice-chair of the Law and Justice Committee for the National Council of State Legislators.

Thompson chaired a Nebraska State Patrol Task Force in 2000 and a Nebraska Juvenile Justice System Task Force in 1998.

She and her husband, James, have four children.
