Todd Tiahrt was elected to the U.S. House in an upset in 1994, defeating nine-term incumbent Democratic Rep. Dan Glickman with 53 percent of the vote. Tiahrt aired commercials in which Glickman's face morphed into President Clinton's.
Tiahrt defeated Democrat Randy Rathbun, the U.S. attorney, with 50 percent of the vote in 1996, his only other close race.
In 1998, Tiahrt defeated Democrat Jim Lawing with 58 percent of the vote. In 2000 he fended off a re-election bid against Democrat Carlos Nolla, a former Glickman aide, 54 percent to Nolla's 42 percent. In a 2002 rematch, Tiahrt trounced Nolla, 61 percent to 37 percent.
