Fred Upton was elected to the U.S. House in 1986, with 62 percent of the vote, beating Democrat Daniel Roche. He was re-elected to three consecutive terms, defeating Democrat Andy Davis in 1992 with 62 percent of the vote. He defeated Democrat David Taylor in 1994 with 73 percent.
In 1996, he was re-elected with 68 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Clarence Annen. Upton defeated Annen again in 1998, winning a seventh House term with 70 percent of the vote.
In 2000, he was re-elected with 68 percent of the vote over Democratic activist James Bupp of Sturgis.
He was re-elected in 2002 with 69 percent of the vote over Democrat Gary Giguere.
