Biography:

Jim Walsh was born in Syracuse, N.Y., and now lives in the town of Onondaga. He received a bachelor's degree in history from St. Bonaventure University in 1970. He served two years in the Peace Corps in Nepal as an agriculture extension agent.

He was elected to the Syracuse city council in 1977 and became council president in 1985. In 1988, he won election to the House after incumbent George Wortley retired.

Walsh and his wife, Dede, have three children.


Past Campaigns:

Jim Walsh was elected to the Syracuse, N.Y., city council in 1977 and council president in 1985. Walsh was first elected to the U.S. House in 1988, defeating Democrat Rosemary Pooler with 57 percent of the vote. He has not faced strong opposition since.

In 2002, he was re-elected with 72 percent of the vote.
