Anthony Weiner was first elected to the New York City Council in a special election in 1991 and won re-election every two years until his 1998 run for the U.S. House. Weiner, a former aide to the-Rep. Charles Schumer, won Schumer's U.S. House seat in 1998, receiving 66 percent of the vote to Republican Louis Telano's 24 percent. He easily defeated City Councilman Noach Dear in the 2000 Democratic Primary and again in the general election in November.
Weiner defeated Republican Alfred Donohue in 2002 with 65 percent of the vote.
