Biography:

Heather Wilson was born in Keene, N.H., and lives in Albuquerque, N.M. She received a bachelor's degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1982. She was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University in England, where she received a master's degree in 1984 and a doctorate in 1985, in international relations.

She was secretary of the state's Children, Youth and Families Department until she quit to run for Congress in 1998. Wilson was elected to Congress during a June 1998 special election to fill an unexpired term, and then won a full two-year term in the 1998 general election.

She is married to Albuquerque lawyer Jay Hone; they have three children.


Past Campaigns:

Heather Wilson was selected by the Republican Party to run in the June 1998 special election for the unexpired term of Rep. Steve Schiff, R-N.M., who died in office.

She won the Republican primary in the 1st Congressional District in June 1998 with 62 percent of the vote and the special election, defeating Democrat Phillip Maloof, 45 percent to 39 percent.

Wilson won a full term in November 1998, defeating Maloof again, 46-43 percent.

She was unopposed in the June 2000 Republican primary, and was re-elected in a three-way general election race with 50 percent of the vote. The Democratic nominee was John Kelly, a college friend of President Clinton and the U.S. attorney in charge of the early stages of the Wen Ho Lee nuclear secrets case.

Wilson was unopposed in the 2002 GOP primary and went on to win the general election with 55 percent of the vote, her largest margin of victory. She defeated state Sen. Richard Romero of Albuquerque.

She was unopposed in the 2004 GOP primary.
