Biography:

Don Young was born in Meridian, Calif., and resides in Fort Yukon, Alaska. He received a bachelor's degree from California State University at Chico in 1958.

Before heading to Congress, Young was an elementary school teacher. He worked as a riverboat captain. He also served on the Fort Yukon City Council, and as mayor of Fort Yukon. He served in the Alaska House from 1967 to 1971, and in the state Senate from 1971 to 1973.

He was elected to the U.S. House in a 1973 special election and was re-elected to 15 consecutive terms. Young and his wife, Lula, have two children.

Past Campaigns:

Don Young was elected to the U.S. House in a 1973 special election with 51 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Emil Notti.

Young has won re-election for more than three decades, but hasn't enjoyed the same re-election security that Alaska's Senate delegation has traditionally seen. Young faced significant opposition in 1978, 1984, 1986, 1990 and 1992.

More recently, he easily won re-election in the 2000 race with 70 percent of the vote and again in 2002 with 75 percent of the vote.
