Biography:

Birch Evans Bayh III (pronounced "bye") was born in Shirkieville, Ind., and resides in Indianapolis and Washington.

Although his middle name is Evans, he prefers to go by Evan. Bayh was educated at St. Alban's School in Washington. He then went to Indiana University, enrolling in 1974 and studying business economics, receiving a bachelor's degree in 1978. He went on to earn a law degree in 1981 from the University of Virginia.

In 1982, Bayh was a law clerk to Judge James E. Noland, chief judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. He worked for the Washington, D.C., law firm of Hogan and Hartson in 1983, then returned to Indiana in 1984 to work on Democrat Wayne Townsend's unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign.

In December 1984, he joined his father's law firm in Indianapolis. In 1985, he joined the Indianapolis law firm of Bingham, Summers, Welsh and Spilman.

Bayh was elected Indiana secretary of state in 1986. He was elected governor in 1988 and re-elected in 1992. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998.

His father, Birch Evans Bayh Jr., was a Democratic U.S. senator from Indiana for three terms, from 1962 to 1980.

Bayh and his wife, Susan, have twin boys.


Past Campaigns:

Evan Bayh was elected Indiana's secretary of state in 1986, with 53 percent of the vote, defeating Robert O. Bowen, son of former Gov. Otis R. Bowen. In 1988, Bayh won 53 percent of the vote to defeat Republican Lt. Gov. John M. Mutz for the governor's office. In 1992, Bayh defeated Republican Linley Pearson with 63 percent of the vote.

He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998, defeating Fort Wayne Mayor Paul Helmke, a Republican, with 63 percent of the vote.
