Biography:

Robert Bennett was born in Salt Lake City and resides there. He worked on his father Wallace Bennett's winning U.S. Senate campaign in 1950.

Bennett graduated from the University of Utah in 1957 and worked in the family business, Bennett Paint and Glass. He served in the National Guard from 1957 to 1961.

He left the company in 1962 to work as an administrative assistant for Rep. Sherman Lloyd, R-Utah. He served as a congressional liaison to the Department of Transportation in the Nixon Administration, then purchased a Washington, D.C., public relations firm.

Since 1986, he was chief executive officer of the Franklin International Institute, a company which increased sales of its planning calendars from $300,000 in 1985 to $80 million in 1991.

Bennett was elected to the Senate in 1992.

Bennett and his wife, Joyce, have six children.


Past Campaigns:

Robert Bennett was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992 with 58 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Wayne Owens. He was re-elected in 1998, defeating Democrat Scott Leckman with 64 percent of the vote.

Bennett had pledged to serve no more than two terms when he first ran for Senate, but changed his mind, saying that in Congress "seniority rules."
