Biography:

Barbara Boxer was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lives in Greenbrae, Calif.

She received a bachelor's degree in economics from Brooklyn College in 1962 and worked on Wall Street as a stockbroker before moving to California.

She was active in Marin County, Calif., local politics and worked for a local newspaper and radio station before becoming a district aide to Rep. John Burton in 1974. Two years later, she was elected to the Marin County Board of Supervisors.

She succeeded Burton in Congress in 1982 and held that seat until being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992. She was re-elected in 1998.

Boxer and her husband, Stewart, have two grown children.


Past Campaigns:

Barbara Boxer was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992, defeating Republican Bruce Herschensohn with 48 percent of the vote. She was re-elected in 1998, defeating Republican Matt Fong with 53 percent of the vote.

Boxer was elected to the Marin County Board of Supervisors in 1976. She first won her congressional seat in 1982, and was re-elected in 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1990.

She won her last election to the House with 68 percent of the vote.
