Christopher Dodd was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1980. Incumbent Democratic Sen. Abraham Ribicoff of Connecticut retired instead of seeking re-election that year.
Dodd won in 1980 with 56 percent of the vote, beating former Republican Sen. James L. Buckley of New York. Dodd was re-elected in 1986, with 65 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Roger W. Eddy, a former state senator. Dodd won a third term in 1992 with 59 percent of the vote, besting Republican Brook Johnson, who had 38 percent of the vote.
He won a fourth Senate term in 1998, defeating Republican Gary Franks with 65 percent of the vote.
Dodd was elected to the U.S. House in 1974, and was re-elected in 1976 and 1978.
