Biography:

Denise Majette grew up in New York City and attended Yale, then came south to law school at Duke. After working in a Winston-Salem, N.C., law office, Majette moved to a firm in Atlanta. She was appointed judge on the state court in 1993 by then-Gov. Zell Miller and then re-won the seat in an election.

She and her husband, Rogers Mitchell, each have one son from previous marriages. They live in suburban Stone Mountain.

Majette was first elected to the House in 2002, but decided to retire from Congress to run for the Senate in 2004. She survived a primary challenge from businessman Cliff Oxford, defeating him easily in the Democratic primary runoff.

Past Campaigns:

Except for one local state court judge race, Denise Majette had never run for office until she took on Democratic incumbent Rep. Cynthia McKinney in 2002. Majette unseated the five-term incumbent with the help of heavy Republican crossover from the north part of the district and went on to win the general election.

She is leaving the post after one term to run for Senate in a race where Republicans are heavily favored.

She won the Democratic Senate primary race in 2004, defeating businessman Cliff Oxford in a runoff with 59 percent of the vote.
