Jack McMullen describes his early life as difficult. He was one of five children in a family from Staten Island, N.Y. He says his father was frequently out of work because of a chronic illness.

After earning a degree in physics and engineering from Columbia University, McMullen joined the U.S. Navy. He served in Washington on the staff of Admiral Hyman Rickover, working on nuclear-powered submarine technology.

After retiring from the Navy, McMullen earned law and business degrees at Harvard and formed his own consulting business. He has owned a vacation home in Vermont since 1983 and became a permanent resident in 1998. He has been active in state Republican Party politics ever since.

Past Campaigns:

Jack McMullen first ran for elective office in 1998, shortly after moving to Vermont permanently. He sought to challenge Sen. Patrick Leahy in 1998 but lost the Republican primary to a retired dairy farmer who had gained fame in a regional movie about politics.
