Biography:

Patty Murray was born and resides in Shoreline, Wash. She received her bachelor's degree in physical education at Washington State University in 1972. She was an instructor of the parental education program at Shoreline Community College and a member of the Shoreline School Board, 1983-89. Murray was a citizen lobbyist for education and environmental issues from 1983 to 1988. She was elected to the state Senate in 1988. After a single term in the Legislature, including election as party whip, Murray was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992 and re-elected in 1998. She and her husband, Rob, have two children.


Past Campaigns:

Patty Murray was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992 with 55 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Rod Chandler. She won re-election in 1998, defeating Republican U.S. Rep. Linda Smith with 58 percent of the vote. Murray ran for state Senate in 1988, defeating incumbent Republican Bill Kiskaddon.
