Charles Schumer was elected to three terms in the New York Assembly, serving, 1975-81. He was elected to the U.S. House in 1980, beating Republican Theodore Silverman with 78 percent of the vote. He was re-elected to four consecutive terms with at least 70 percent of the vote each time.
In 1990, Schumer defeated Republican Patrick Kinsella with 80 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 1992 with 89 percent of the vote, defeating Independent candidate Alice Gaffney. He was re-elected in 1994 with 71 percent, defeating Republican James McCall. In 1996, he was re-elected with 74 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Michael Verga.
In 1998 Schumer emerged the victor in a four-way primary against Geraldine Ferraro, Mark Green and Eric Ruano Melendez. Schumer garnered 50.8 percent of the vote. He went on to defeat three-term GOP incumbent Alfonse D'Amato with 54.6 percent of the vote.
