Biography:

Art Small was born in Brunswick, Maine in 1933.

He received a bachelor's degree from Bowdoin College and enlisted in the Army Security Agency when he was 20-years-old, serving for three years.

Small got a master's degree in English Literature and his law degree from the University of Iowa. He practiced law in Iowa City and Des Moines.

Small was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives in 1971. He served in the House for eight years and then ran for the Iowa Senate in 1978 where he served until 1986.

Small and his wife, Mary Jo, have three children.
