Biography:

Wayne Sowell was born on Sept. 23, 1958, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and now lives in the Birmingham area. He joined the Army in 1976, beginning 27 years of military service.

Sowell briefly studied political science at the University of Alabama-Birmingham and has appeared as a candidate in numerous unsuccessful House, Senate and governor races.

He was required to take leave from his job as a telephone claims representative with the Social Security Administration in Birmingham to run for the Senate.

Past Campaigns:

Wayne Sowell has never won a major political race, but that hasn't stopped him from trying often. He ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1986 and 1988, governor in 1994 and 1998 and Senate in 1996 and 2002.

Despite finishing a distant third in the 2002 Democratic primary that also included attorney Julian McPhillips and state Auditor Susan Parker, Sowell played a role in the outcome. He attracted enough votes to force a runoff between the two, then endorsed Parker. She won the primary before losing to Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions in the November election.
