Biography:

The son of an iron worker and a descendant of Mormon converts from England and Netherlands, Paul Van Dam was born and raised in Salt Lake City, where he still lives. He received his bachelor's degree and law degree from the University of Utah.

Van Dam was first elected to public office in 1975 as Salt Lake County district attorney.

In 1989, he defeated a two-term Republican to become Utah's attorney general, but stayed in that office for just one term.He worked in private practice, retiring in 2000.
