Biography:

Samara Barend was an aide to former Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan and to Hillary Rodham Clinton during the former first lady's successful run in 2000 to fill Moynihan's seat.

If elected, the 27-year-old Barend would become the youngest member of Congress. It is her first run for office _ she easily beat former stripper Jeremy Alderson, in the Democratic primary.

A community activist who lives in Corning, she led the effort in the late 1990s to turn New York's state Route 17 into Interstate 86. She is the director of Minds of Steel, which promotes healthy habits and exercise for children affected by mental illness.

She earned a bachelor's degree in management from the University of Pennsylvania in 1999 and a master's degree from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government in 2004. She is single.
