Biography:

James Garner was first elected mayor of Hempstead _ New York state's largest village with close to 70,000 residents _ in 1989.

The village is home to Hofstra University and the training facilities of the New York Jets football team.

He also attracted national attention, serving as president of the United States Conference of Mayors in 2003-04, where he led a delegation on a tour of four African nations _ South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland and Uganda _ to analyze the impact of HIV/AIDS.

A Vietnam-era veteran, Garner earned a bachelor's degree from Adelphi University and established a successful pest control company that his family still owns and operates today.

In 1986, he was appointed a delegate to the White House Conference on Small Business. Recently, he was appointed to the U.S. Small Business Administration's National Advisory Council as well as state and local advisory committees on Homeland Security.

He is a member of numerous organizations including the NAACP, One Hundred Black Men of Nassau/Suffolk and American Legion Post 1488.
