A veteran of state politics, Billy Creech won eight terms in the state House before redistricting put him in the same district as his conservative Republican ally Leo Daughtry and Creech decided to run for Congress.
In the 2004 GOP primary, Creech defeated political newcomer Robert Rogan of Raleigh with about 80 percent of the vote. He faces four-term Democratic incumbent Rep. Bob Etheridge in the November general election.
