Anne Fischer is a 1967 graduate of Cornell University who holds a master's degree from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.

Fischer has a background in social work and is trained as a mediator. She worked for 10 years as a social worker for Catawba County and lists her current occupation as a facilitator who helps people reduce stress, dyslexias and other impediments to performance.

Fischer says she is a practicing Unitarian devoted to living the principles of the Golden Rule and serving others. Her hobbies are gardening, reading and swimming.

She has a 21-year-old son, Brandon.

Past Campaigns:

In her first run for elective office, Anne Fischer edged John Cole in the July 2004 primary for the Democratic nomination in the 10th Congressional District.

Fischer ended up with 51 percent of the vote, outpolling Cole by just 280 votes.

Fischer is a heavy underdog in her general election race against the winner of the GOP primary runoff. The 10th District, which sprawls across the state's foothills region, is blue-collar and very conservative.
