Biography:

A native of Durham, N.C., Fisher graduated from that city's public schools, then earned an undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She also holds a master's degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University.

Fisher has worked as a physician and in corporate health management positions in New York state, Duplin County, N.C., Tennessee and Chicago.

In Chicago, she served as medical director for Amoco Oil; at Oak Ridge, Tenn., she oversaw occupational health as a Martin Marietta facility.

She retired in 2000 from job as chief of occupational health services at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salisbury, N.C.

Fisher is single and has two adopted sons.

Past Campaigns:

Ada Fisher was one of seven Republicans who ran in 2002 for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Jesse Helms. She finished fourth in the primary to Elizabeth Dole, receiving 1 percent of the vote compared to Dole's 80 percent.

Fisher argued after the primary to elections officials that Dole didn't meet state residency requirements to run, but that complaint was thrown out.

She also complained during the campaign that she was kept out of a series of free television presentations that only featured Dole and another GOP rival.

She was unopposed in the 2004 GOP primary for the 12th Congressional District and is an underdog in her general election race against longtime incumbent Mel Watt.
