Biography:

Jim Harrell, a native of Surry County, has practiced dentistry in Elkin, N.C., for the past 30 years and been active in local volunteer organizations and local politics.He was elected to the Surry County Board of Commissioners in 1990 and is in his fourth term.

Harrell has been active in the American Dental Association, most recently as chairman of the its Council on Governmental Affairs, which lobbied for improved access to dental care for Medicare recipients.

Harrell is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Medical College of Virginia, where he was student body president.

Harrell and his wife, Barbara, have three sons, including state Rep. James A. Harrell III, who represents part of Surry County. Their other sons are students at the University of South Carolina.


Past Campaigns:

Jim Harrell ran successful campaigns for the Surry County Board of Commissioners in 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2002.

In the July 2004 Democratic primary in the 5th Congressional District, Harrell captured nearly three-quarters of the votes in a race against Andrew Winfrey and Roger Kirkman. He is expected to face an uphill fight in the general election against state Sen. Virginia Foxx, as the district is heavily Republican.
