Biography:

Chris John was born in Crowley, La., where he still lives. He is a graduate of Notre Dame High School and he received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Louisiana State in 1982.

He is part owner and vice president of John N. John Truckline Inc., which his family has owned since 1925. He was electedin 1987 to the Louisiana Legislature seat his father, John N. John Jr., held from 1972 until his death in a car wreck in 1982.

Before Chris John was elected to the Crowley Board of Aldermen at age 24, he was a legislative aide to his father. He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1996 and is running for the Senate seat being vacated by fellow Democrat John Breaux.

John and his wife, Payton Smith, daughter of state Rep. John Smith of Leesville, La., have two children.


Past Campaigns:

Chris John was elected to the U.S. House in 1996, receiving 53 percent of the vote against Democrat Hunter Lundy. He was unopposed in 1998.

In 2000, he won with 83 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2002 with 87 percent of the vote.

John served in the Louisiana state Legislature from 1988 to 1995.
