Johnson then attended Wake Forest University School of Law, receiving her law degree in 1985.

After graduation, she worked as a law clerk for the United States Bankruptcy Court in Greensboro and in private practice in Washington, D.C., focusing on estate planning and tax law, before she was named counsel to the House Ethics Committee in 1996.

She was appointed to a senior staff position with the House Armed Services Committee shortly after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Johnson also served as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University and the University of San Diego.

Past Campaigns:

Virginia Johnson won the July 2004 Republican primary in the 13th Congressional District with 56 percent of the vote, defeating tobacco lobbyist Graham Boyd.

She is considered an underdog in her general election race against incumbent Democrat Brad Miller, who won the newly created seat in 2002.
