Matt Blunt's family has been in Missouri for six generations. His father, U.S. Rep. Roy Blunt, is House Majority Whip, the No. 3 House Republican charged with keeping GOP members informed and in line.

The younger Blunt graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and spent five years on active duty in the Navy. He later served a two-year term in the state House of Representatives before being elected secretary of state in 2000.

He and his wife, Melanie, are expecting their first child.

Matt Blunt was elected to a state House seat from southwest Missouri in 1998. He served one term before running for the statewide office of secretary of state, and winning, in 2000.The race for governor marks his second statewide campaign.
