Biography:

Claire McCaskill was born and raised in Missouri. Her father worked for a time at a feed mill, a rural tie she has noted in her campaign.

She has served in the state legislature, as Jackson County legislator, Jackson County prosecutor and, for the past six years, as state auditor.

She is married to Joseph Shepard, a nursing home owner.

Past Campaigns:

Claire McCaskill first ran for office in 1982, winning a Jackson County seat in the state House of Representatives, where she served until 1989.

She became part of the Jackson County Legislature and served from 1990-1992, when she was elected Jackson County prosecutor. She held that role until she ran for state auditor, an office she has held since 1999.
