Jim Newberry was born and raised in Springfield, Mo., the son of a World War II Marine who ran unsuccessfully for state and local office.

Newberry received his bachelor's degree from Southwest Missouri State University and began law school at the University of Missouri, but left in 1969 to join the Army. In 1972, he was discharged from active duty and returned home to finish law school.

He entered private practice with a firm in Springfield, then later opened his own private practice. Newberry was a finalist for appointment to the Missouri Court of Appeals' southern district and was President of the Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association in 1995.

In 2002, he changed the focus of his law practice from litigation to serving as a mediator of civil disputes. He and his wife, Kim, have four children.
