Bob Alexander grew up in Michigan and earned a bachelor's in history at the University of Michigan in 1966 and a master's in education in 1970.

He served in the Peace Corps in India and taught middle school and high school in Kentucky and Michigan between 1968 and 1978. He worked in the office of state Sen. Ed Pierce, a well-known assisted suicide advocate from Ann Arbor, from 1978-1985, and later held various positions in health policy with the Michigan Department of Social Services (now the Michigan Department of Community Health).

He retired from state government in 1999 and worked for the nonprofit health policy group Citizens for Better Care from 2000-2001. He also has managed various campaigns, including a campaign to unseat 8th District Rep. Mike Rogers in 2002 and Rep. Dennis Kucinich's presidential campaign in 2003.

Alexander is married and has three children.

Past Campaigns:

Bob Alexander beat Matt Ferguson in an Aug. 3 primary to run against incumbent Rep. Mike Rogers, a two-term Republican from Brighton.

Alexander ran twice for the state House in Ann Arbor. Both campaigns were unsuccessful. He led an unsuccessful attempt to recall former Gov. John Engler in the early 1990s and, until earlier this year, headed Rep. Dennis Kucinich's presidential campaign in Michigan.
