Biography:

Lee Jones is a Union Pacific engineer, but he spent almost two decades lobbying for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers in Topeka and Washington.

Jones grew up in Miami County, where his parents farmed but began working in the railroad industry after graduating from Osawatomie High School in 1969. He graduated from Baker University in Baldwin City in 1973 with a degree in sociology.

Eight years later, Jones began lobbying for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers in Topeka, a job he held until 1988. He took a similar post in Washington that year and held it for two years, before deciding to run for Congress.

He was the Democratic nominee in the 3rd Congressional District that year but lost to Republican incumbent Jan Meyers.

He returned to Washington as a vice president for the engineers' union, which also gave him lobbying duties. He held that position for a decade, returning to Kansas three years ago. He now lives in Lenexa.

Past Campaigns:

Lee Jones was the Democratic nominee in the 3rd Congressional District in 1990, but lost the general election to Republican incumbent Jan Meyers.

Jones also lost the 2004 Democratic primary to virtually unknown candidate Robert Conroy, but Conroy decided to withdraw, saying he was not up to the task of running in the general election. Jones was then installed as the party's nominee by the Democratic State Committee.
