In his first political campaign, George Nethercutt defeated House Speaker Thomas Foley in 1994 with 51 percent of the vote. Nethercutt was re-elected in 1996 with 55 percent of the vote against Democrat Judy Olson.
In 1998, Nethercutt was re-elected, defeating Democrat Brad Lyons with 57 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2000 with 57 percent of the vote.
In 2002, he was re-elected with 63 percent of the vote.
Nethercutt is running against Democratic Sen. Patty Murray in 2004. The race pits a conservative from Eastern Washington against a well-known liberal from the more populous western half of the state.
