Biography:

George R. Nethercutt was born in Spokane, Wash., where he still resides. He received a bachelor's degree in English from Washington State University in 1967 and a law degree from Gonzaga University in 1971.

Nethercutt worked for U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, from 1972 to 1977, and served as his chief of staff. He was chairman of the Spokane County Republican Party from 1990 to 1994.

He has been part of a private family law practice in Washington state since 1977. He was elected to the U.S. House in 1994 and re-elected in 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002.

In 2003, Nethercutt announced a bid to challenge Democratic Sen. Patty Murray in 2004, abandoning his House seat.

Nethercutt and his wife, Mary Beth, have two children.


Past Campaigns:

In his first political campaign, George Nethercutt defeated House Speaker Thomas Foley in 1994 with 51 percent of the vote. Nethercutt was re-elected in 1996 with 55 percent of the vote against Democrat Judy Olson.

In 1998, Nethercutt was re-elected, defeating Democrat Brad Lyons with 57 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2000 with 57 percent of the vote.

In 2002, he was re-elected with 63 percent of the vote.

Nethercutt is running against Democratic Sen. Patty Murray in 2004. The race pits a conservative from Eastern Washington against a well-known liberal from the more populous western half of the state.
