Bag It

Ahhhhh, August. Summer's on the wane, and everyone's fleeing town faster than you can say dog days. Whatever travel escapes you have planned for the last blast of summer, packing, never mind what to pack in, is still one of those nasty necessities. Whether you're off exploring the Canadian Rockies, boating on the Chesapeake for the weekend, or taking an extended three-week tour of Eastern Europe, lighten your burden with our top luggage choices for the getaway season.

L.L. Bean's Boat and Tote has been around since the 1940s, its classic look and sturdy qualities (like double-stitched seams and moisture-resistant fabric) beloved by old salts and landlubbers alike. The zip-top style adds an extra security feature, and we think the extra-large version for $36.50 is a bargain and just the thing for a weekend (or maybe even a week) on the water.

Distributed by Tumi, which has consistently received high rankings from Consumer Reports, the Italian-designed Bric's collection of luggage with its pebble-grain sueded fabrics in olive, black, sand and brown gets our nod for looks. The 22-inch carryall goes for $275.
Available at Bentley's in Montgomery Mall.

One of the best features of the Victorinox line from Swiss Army is its signature red color. Among its other nice touches are zippers that curve for a firmer grip, well-made handles that are not likely to fly off, and tie-down military-looking straps with buckles that keep clothes securely in their place. Prices range from $160 for a carry-on to $320 (for an easy-to-store garment bag).

The fly-fishing set and we go for the rugged-looking Battenkill extra-large duffle (15 inches by 35 inches by 13 inches) for $225 from Orvis. It's a good bargain and packs in even more than you think it can. End pockets are ideal for storing maps, books, etc. And best of all, if you happen to wear it out, Orvis will make good on its guaranteed-for-life claim.
