With Valentine's Day approaching, the annual search for the most romantic seats in Washington kicks into high gear. But part of the fun of snuggling is being seen -- and envied by less fortunate souls -- without being heard, so the partly-concealed or semi-enclosed tables are even more desirable. Among the most evocative:

COPELAND'S -- 4300 King St., Alexandria; 703-671-7997. Curtained booths numbers 91-93.

DC COAST -- 14th and K streets NW; 202-216-5988. Curtained tables 14 and 15.

EQUINOX -- 818 Connecticut Ave. NW: 202-331-8118. Booths 11 and 12.

LANSDOWNE GRILLE -- 44050 Woodridge Pkwy. (in the Lansdowne Resort), Lansdowne; 703-729-4073. Booth 28 and "hidden" table 10.

MELTING POT -- 1220 19th St., NW; 202-857-0777. Booths 71-74.

ORTANIQUE -- 730 11th St., NW; 202-393-0975. Curtained tables 10-13, 71-72, 80-82.

RESTAURANT SEVEN -- 8521 Leesburg Pike, Tysons Corner; 703-847-0707. Curtained tables numbers 1 and 5.

POSTE -- 555 Eighth St. NW (in the Hotel Monaco); 202-783-6060. "Lover's booth" number 62.

SPIKE & CHARLIE'S -- Cathedral and Preston streets, Baltimore; 410-752-8144. "The cylinder," a table nearly enclosed by a circular wooden "curtain."
