Spring Cleaning Routine
Clear Out the Clutter
Spring is the perfect time to throw out the old to make room for the new. Read "Five Things to Do in 2002" for decluttering tips for overcrowded closets, teetering stacks of books, messy nests of paperwork, photographs and batter-spattered recipes.
And consider professional help when it comes to home organization. "Closet Cravings" looks at budget and high-end options for creating uncluttered spaces.
Work on the Windows
Warmer days provide the opportunity to wash your windows, inside and out. Pamela Cox of Virginia Window Cleaners in Alexandria advises using a non-ammonia aerosol cleaner for streak-free, film-free glass. Remove storm windows and install screens. Recaulk windows if necessary.
Clean Carpets and Floors
Thoroughly clean your hardwood floors; wax if necessary. Inspect your carpets for wear and tear -- consider carpet dyeing for stains that won't come out. Wash or dry-clean area rugs.
Clean the Kitchen
Discard ancient condiments and mystery leftovers; wash the interior of your refrigerator and freezer. Paw through your pots and pans and donate lightly-used items to a local charity. Mop the kitchen floor.
Clean Matresses and Cushions
Rotate and flip mattresses and sofa cushions. Vacuum mattresses, box springs and sofa cushions.
Check Your Home's Safety
Replace the batteries in your smoke, natural gas and radon detectors.
