Serbia's Kosovo province contains important energy resources for Yugoslavia, including power plants and coal mines. Serbs consider Kosovo the center of their civilization, and they hold dear hundreds of historic and religious sites.

This is where the Serbs suffered their most serious military defeat, at the hands of the Muslim Ottomans in 1389.
