Washington Post photographer Lucian Perkins traveled through Kosovo in June 1999 documenting the initial stages of the NATO troop occupation and reactions of returning refugees. What he found was a province devastated by war, with tensions still running high between Serbs and ethnic Albanians.

The photos depict this journey through Kosovo. Some images are accompanied by diary entries from the photographer, who took notes on his encounters.
