Fidel Castro announces at the fund-raiser that he will invade Cuba in 1956. As promised, Castro and 83 rebels launched a Dec. 2 attack in Oriente province. Most were killed by Batista's forces or imprisoned. Castro and 11 others fled into the Sierra Maestra and conducted guerrilla warfare until Batista fled Jan. 1, 1959.
