CIA-backed bomber pilots attack Santiago de Cuba on April 15, 1961, two days before the Bay of Pigs invasion. The bombing marked the beginning of the U.S. plan to overthrow Fidel Castro's communist regime. The pilots intended to cripple the Cuban air force but missed most of their targets, hitting these civilian planes instead.
